How to Choose the Right 3D Printing Technology for Your Product

Choosing the right printing technology is the first – and often most consequential – decision in any product development project. A wrong choice means parts that miss requirements, inflated costs and long lead times. This article presents a simple methodology for the decision.

The first four questions

  • What is the part’s function – visual, functional, or end-use?
  • What are the accuracy and finish requirements?
  • Which material is required – standard plastic, engineering, or metal?
  • How many units, and on what timeline?

Matching technology to requirements

SLA – accuracy and visual finish

SLA (stereolithography) suits visual prototypes, marketing models, casting patterns and Vacuum Casting masters. Accuracy down to ±50µm and an exceptionally smooth finish. Drawback: relative brittleness and limited UV resistance.

SLS and MJF – mechanical strength with no supports

SLS (nylon powder) and MJF (Multi Jet Fusion) are made for functional parts, complex mechanisms and end-use applications. No supports needed, enabling fully free geometries. MJF delivers higher throughput and a denser finish.

FDM – cost-effective and large

FDM is the right pick for very large parts (over 500 mm), jigs & fixtures for production lines, or specialty engineering materials like ULTEM and PEEK. Layer lines are more visible, but per-unit cost is low.

SLM – fully dense metal

When the requirement is a true metal part – titanium, aluminum, steel or Inconel – SLM is the technology. Main uses: aerospace components, medical implants and industrial parts with high thermal demands.

Common mistakes

  • Picking FDM for a visual part – layer lines wreck the look.
  • Using SLA for a functional load-bearing part.
  • Jumping to SLM before the geometry has stabilized.
